My Interview with Paranormal Romance Author Jenna Byrnes

1
Q: Please tell us a little bit about yourself. Where are you from, what is your background?

A: Hey everyone, and thanks for having me, Vampiress! I’m Jenna Byrnes, an author from the Midwest, USA. Here’s my official bio:

Jenna Byrnes could use more cabinet space and more hours in a day. She’d fill the kitchen with gadgets her husband purchases off TV and let him cook for her to his heart’s content. She’d breeze through the days adding hours of sleep, and more time for writing the hot, erotic romance she loves to read.

Jenna thinks everyone deserves a happy ending, and loves to provide as many of those as possible to her gay, lesbian and hetero characters. Her favorite quote, from a pro-gay billboard, is “Be careful who you hate. It may be someone you love.”

Q: When did you first realize that you wanted to be a writer, and What was it that inspired you to start writing?

A: I penned the first of several ‘novels’ starting at age ten on notebook paper. I didn’t know anything about romance, and they were pretty bad, but I knew even then that I loved to write.
3
Q: When did you write your first book?

A: I took up writing again about fifteen years ago. Those first manuscripts floundered for ten years, until 2005 when I made my first sale to an epublisher.
4
Q: How many books have you written? Do you have a favorite?

A: I had to go count the covers on my website! I’m at 59 novels, novellas and short stories. Asking me to pick a favorite is like choosing one of my children over the others. Just can’t do it! I’ve always had a soft spot for romantic suspense and I’d have to say Ocean Breeze, Little Squeeze is a book I’m really proud of. Also, the Kindred Spirits novels I’ve co-authored with Jude Mason are really great and a lot of fun to write. We just finished our fourth in that series.
5
Q: When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A: Sometimes a teacher, a veterinarian, and when I sang in front of the mirror, a rock star! I ended up closest to the teaching field.
6
Q: How long does it typically take you to write a book?

A: Depends on the length, of course. In normal times I can usually write 1,000 to 1,500 words a day, six days a week. That’s without a lot of turmoil in my life. So far, 2010 has brought a lot of stuff to my family and I’ve slowed down writing just a bit to take care of life. I’m hoping that will turn around soon!
7
Q: Where do the ideas for your books come from?

A: Anywhere! Someone walking down the street, or often times a song gives me a thread of inspiration. Phaze has a line called Phaze Rocks, where the book titles are also song titles. I have a Springsteen series called Streets of Fire, and Jude Mason and I have a Bon Jovi series called Slippery When Wet. Those were great fun to write.
8
Q: Where is your favortie place to write, where do you feel most creative?

A: I can only write in front of my computer. I’ve never been one to take a notepad outside and write, it’s just too distracting. I like the structure and discipline of writing at my desktop.
9
Q: Do you have any role models? Have there been any other writers that have inspired you?

A: No role models to speak of, but I have to say I’m in awe of J.K. Rowling. The way she wove her characters together in intricate plots for seven books was just amazing. I loved every one of her Harry Potter books.
10
Q: When you're not writing, what do you like to do for fun?

A: Taking walks with my hubby and watching movies with him and the family are about the best!
11
Q: Do you have anything that you'd like to say to your readers?

A: Thanks for all the support and kind words over the years! I appreciate everyone who reads my work and really love to hear from people who enjoyed it. Q: What kind of advice would you give to new writers?

A: Have a lot of patience, because things often happen slowly in the publishing business. E-publishing has changed that some, but it can still take awhile from submission to release date. Follow submission guidelines and remember, every story is not for every publisher. Always try to improve yourself, and most important of all, keep writing, and keep your name out there!

Thanks again for having me here, Vampiress!
